For many small business owners, access to capital shapes what’s possible. But understanding how to qualify, evaluate options, and make informed decisions can be difficult.
For many small business owners, access to capital can shape what’s possible for their business — whether that means purchasing equipment, managing cash flow, expanding operations, or investing in long-term growth. But understanding how to qualify for financing, evaluate different options, and make informed financial decisions can be difficult without clear, actionable guidance.
Accion Opportunity Fund (AOF) is a nonprofit small business lender that provides affordable capital, personalized financial guidance, and digital learning tools to entrepreneurs across the United States. As part of that work, AOF launched Learn with AOF, a personalized financial education platform designed to help small business owners better understand their options, strengthen their financial position, and make more informed long-term decisions. The platform is also helping embed financial education directly into the lending journey itself — meeting entrepreneurs with guidance in the moments they need it most.
We sat down with Accion Opportunity Fund’s Chief Customer Experience Officer, Nicole Van Der Tuin, to discuss what it looks like to personalize financial guidance at scale, why timing matters as much as content, and where she sees the biggest opportunity to improve financial outcomes for small business owners.
Where do you see the biggest opportunity to improve financial outcomes for small business owners?
Making the path to capital more clear and specific — so owners understand why they were denied, what their options are, and what steps they can take next. Closing that information gap may be the single highest-leverage intervention in the entire small business ecosystem.
Why does this change matter for small business owners?
Most small business owners are already taking on difficult, ambitious things every day, yet very few receive clear guidance on what they actually need to do to qualify for capital. Learn with AOF is helping close that gap by creating a more transparent and actionable path forward for owners who might otherwise be left at “no.”
What was this work designed to change?
Learn with AOF was designed to make financial guidance more personalized, timely, and actionable for small business owners — delivering the right information when it’s actually relevant to their situation. One of its clearest applications is helping entrepreneurs understand exactly what they need to do to qualify for capital instead of leaving them with a generic rejection and no path forward.
What does it look like to embed financial education directly into the lending journey?
It means guidance shows up in the moment it’s needed — helping applicants understand exactly what to do over the next 6–12 months to qualify instead of a generic “no,” or how to use their loan to strengthen their business and personal financial health, including their credit score. The education isn’t a separate destination; it’s woven into the same moment the small business owner is already engaged with us.
What makes a “high-tech, high-touch” approach effective in supporting entrepreneurs?
Technology makes it possible to personalize guidance at scale, while human support remains critical in the moments that require trust, judgment, and nuance. Together, that combination helps bring more tailored financial guidance to small business owners who have historically had less access to it.
What did you learn that others in the field should pay attention to?
Most small business owners don’t need more content; they need the right content, delivered at the moment they can actually use it. What matters most is turning information into action. When guidance is specific, timely, and tied to a real decision, it’s far more likely to change outcomes.
What has shifted as a result?
More than 5,000 small business owners have already received personalized learning plans through Learn with AOF. As the platform grows, AOF is also building the analytics needed to better understand how tailored guidance translates into stronger financial health, economic stability, and long-term mobility for entrepreneurs.
How does access to the right financial knowledge change outcomes for small business owners?
Access to the right financial guidance can create long-term value for both businesses and households. For example, truckers often own rigs worth around $37,000 by the time they pay them off. Guidance on how to maintain, finance, and manage those assets over time could help owners preserve or increase the value of those assets by 10-15%, creating benefits that extend well beyond the original loan itself.
What is the next phase of this work?
Closing the measurement loop and building comparison tools that let owners see predatory financing next to the responsible options — including the 'wait and qualify' path — so the real cost difference is obvious before they sign.
